The Department of Elderly Services provides a comprehensive community focal point on aging to meet the needs of the older citizens of the City.  Many opportunities are created for persons to come together for a variety of services and activities which enhance their dignity, support their independence and encourage their involvement with the community.

Medical Equipment Loan Closet
The Loan Closet Program is sponsored by the West Haven Senior Center.  This program provides various medical equipment, free of charge, to any city resident in need.  Some of the equipment available includes:  wheelchairs, walkers, canes, commodes.
The West Haven Senior Center at 201 Noble Street operates a small store to help defray some of the costs of the loan closet.  Donations of medical equipment or items for the store are always welcome.
Photo Identification Cards
Laminated photo identification cards are available to Seniors age 55 or older.  There is a $1.00 charge.
Senior Housing
The West Haven Housing Authority operates four (4) Senior Housing Complexes in the City, for a total of 517 apartments.  Applications must be submitted directly to the Housing Authority at 15 Glade Street, Telephone number (203) 934-8671
Senior Centers
The Department of Elderly Services provides a variety of services to any resident age 55 or older through the operation of two Senior Centers. Updates of programs and activities are published in a monthly newsletter.  The Senior Centers are open Monday through Friday, 9:00 am – 4:00 pm.

Programs Include: daily lunch • bingo • exercise • educational seminars • crafts • cards • billiards • dance classes • discussion groups • numerous day and overnight trips.
Outreach & Referral
Staff is available to provide information and assistance for a variety of concerns to the Elderly, such as:  applying for entitlement programs, housing needs and home care services.  Home visits are made to isolated seniors who are unable to come to the center.
Transportation is provided to any West Haven resident age 55 or older for Medical appointments and to the Senior Centers.  This service is under contract to the Greater New Haven Transit District.  They should be contacted directly at (203) 281-2520 to schedule appointments.
Medical:  Door to door transportation is provided to New Haven, West Haven and the Orange Medical Center.  There is a $2.00 round trip charge.  This service operates Monday through Friday from 9:00 am to 2:30 pm.  Appointments should be scheduled at least one week in advance.
Senior Centers:  Transportation is provided free to any Senior who wishes to attend either Center.
Savin Rock Trolley:  Free transportation to local shopping areas and other points of interest.  Operates Monday through Friday from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm.  Trolley schedules are available at the Senior Centers.
Nutritional Services
A nutritious hot lunch is offered at 5 congregate meal sites throughout the City, Monday through Friday, for Seniors age 60 or older.  A $2.00 donation is requested.  Reservations must be made a day in advance by calling the appropriate site.

Senior Companions
The Department of Elderly Services is a host agency which places older volunteers with frail, isolated, homebound elderly. Eligible residents can receive up to 20 hours per week of a Senior Companion’s services.
